Though, on the weekends, our usual has become French toast (there's always bread to use up), occasionally we'll plan on something that hits a different spot, like biscuits and gravy or this morning's mushroom/pepper/sausage frittata. Seems we haven't yet found the most tasty bacon-y Speck to warrant keeping it on hand as we would like. But this sausage...mmmmmmmm.
Weekdays, I've found a new favorite in a Swiss-made Greek-style fig yogurt + fresh fruit + Birchermüesli. If I don't have it for breakfast, it's a great afternoon snack.
August 1st was Swiss National Day, so we made ourselves a nominally Swiss lunch before heading to Zurich for the festivities of August first Wurst, August first Brot, paprika chips (think BBQ), and a couple different mustards. Later we feared minor and/or major burns while wandering along Zürichsee...but that's another story.
Another Swiss favorite is Spätzle, which are sort of like small dumplings. This ready-made variety has veggies in it.
Nick's pretty excited, maybe for the balsamic pork and caramelized onions too. Oh, and the wine you see is one of our favorites - a Nero d'Avola rosato at a whopping $4.
Mexican food is sorely missed in our new lives here. Fortunately, there's a Mexican import shop in Zürich called El Maiz. Unfortunately, it's insanely expensive for products that are pretty hit and miss. But, look, we made fajitas!
One day I went to Zürich during the day while Nick was working. It turned out to be a poor choice of days to venture out because rain, but I took refuge in Cafe Babu. The name sounded somewhat familiar from random research, but wow. This was one of the best salads I've eaten, and in one of the most cozy but open spaces. Between my meal, my book, the rain and the people-watching, it was easy for the hours to slip by. When you come visit, we're going there.
Of course the photo doesn't let on what's going on here flavor-wise, but know that this is among our favorite ice creams here. Definitely #1 on the list of those available to purchase at the grocery. It's Migros Select Coffee & Whisky...with the trial cookie de jour, a toffee-almond-chocolate-platz-something-or-other.
Next time we post about food, we'll try to have more about restaurant meals. Sadly, there have been only a few that deserve the attention, but hopefully we'll stumble upon some greatness in the coming months.
